The total journey
of the shuttle journey from
from Greymouth to Christchurch Square is 250 kilometers.
The West Coast has lush vegetation due to its high rainfall and temperate climate.
Shuttles from Greymouth to Christchurch travel along Highway 73, also now known as 'The Great Alpine highway'. The Highway was built in the mid 1860's as a road to take gold miners to the gold fields of Hokitika. Stage coaches ran on the road from 1865. Building the section of road from the summit of Arthur's Pass to Otira taken longer than anticipated, and almost as long as the total time to build the rest of the road.
The Otira Gorge has been modified in 2000 with the addition of a viaduct up the middle of the Otira gorge to ensure better route security plus the addition of a rock protection shelter and the Reid falls being diverted over the road, with two lane carriageway.
Another scenic highlight of our Greymouth to Christchurch shuttle service is Arthur's Pass. The summit of Arthur's Pass is 920m above sea level and is subject to snow in the winter months. During December Mount Cook lilies can be seen in abundance.
The township of Arthur's Pass was the construction village for the construction
of the Otira Tunnel and was established in 1908. Many of the workers' cottages can still be seen on
both sides of the road.
The road out of Arthur's Pass to Bealey is the old original stage coach road
and many of the mile stones can still be seen beside the road.
You can also see the
ramp where the stage coaches entered or left the Waimakareri River.
The high country rainfall between Arthur's Pass and the east coast is significantly lower than on the West Coast side of the Alps. The vegetation such as matagouri and snow grass, highlight this change.
Porters Pass named after the early run holders of Castle hill, is 940 metres above sea level and is higher than Arthur's Pass.
Your West Coast Shuttle from Geymouth to Christchurch with then travel over the Canterbury P lains. The Canterbury Plains are the largest plains in New Zealand and is the most irrigated region in the country. The area is popular for growing crops such as wheat, barley and potatoes. L ivestock in the region is generally sheep, however some cattle are also farmed.
